Android apps coming to Windows 10: what changes

Windows 10 is preparing for a major revamp in 2021 and Android apps could also arrive on Microsoft’s operating system

Starting in 2021, Windows 10 users could have a welcome change when it comes to apps. Microsoft is in fact working on a solution capable of bringing to its operating system Android apps, all thanks to what has been informally called “Project Milk”.

Microsoft is not new to this kind of operations, since a similar process was already undertaken to bring to Windows applications of the open source operating system Linux. And this time Linux has its share of merit as well, since Project Latte will be based on the so-called Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL), a special system that allows the main Linux distributions and software packages to run on Redmond’s operating system. For its part, WSL is also at the center of interesting news, as it should soon receive support for Linux GUI apps and hardware acceleration.

The integration of Android apps on Windows 10 could bring with it a flurry of changes on Microsoft’s operating system. In fact, if Project Latte were to finally materialize, Windows 10 could become even richer thanks to the multitude of apps already available for the robot OS.

The apps would be added to the small number already supported by Windows 10, albeit through a completely different expedient. Currently, in fact, the apps work through a streaming made by a compatible smartphone (very few) and not through a normal direct installation process, without going through any phone.

In order to proceed, Project Latte will need to provide an Android subsystem, more or less like what Google has already done for Chrome OS devices. And Google itself, with its Google Play Services, will probably be the big absentee from the project.

In fact, Big G’s apps can currently be installed only on Android-certified devices, in addition to Chrome OS.Therefore, it won’t be such an immediate transition but, such apps, will need to receive some code changes before they can make their debut on Windows.

As anticipated, this novelty shouldn’t see the light before 2021 and, likely, not before the second half of the coming year. However, Microsoft could decide to officially present Project Latte already in the first months, in order to insert it directly in the fall release – and only one – of Windows that should bring interesting interventions, including a substantial change to the graphical interface.
