Today the assignment of the Winter Olympics 2026 is decided. In contention: Italy (Milan – Cortina) and Sweden (Stockholm – Are). How to see the event in streaming
Today is the big day: the IOC will decide the assignment of the 2026 Winter Olympics. There are two proposals in contention: Milan – Cortina and Stockholm – Are. Italy hopes to return to host a major international event after the success of Expo 2015, while Stockholm has an excellent transport system and the desire to organize the Olympics after more than a century since the last time.
To push the Italian candidacy has taken the field even the President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella who recorded a short two-minute video explaining the reasons why the Italian choice is the best. For Italy it would be an excellent opportunity to obtain funds to invest in infrastructure and services for citizens and a way to boost the economy and attract new tourists. Voting will begin at 16:00, while the proclamation of the winner will be at 18:00.
The event will be followed live on TV by both RAI and Sky. In order to watch the 2026 Winter Olympics on TV, you need to tune in from 18:00 on RaiSportHD +, Rai 2 or SkySport 24. There is also the possibility to follow the outcome of the vote in live streaming on RaiPlay and SkyGo.
Which are the cities in contention for the assignment of the 2026 Winter Olympics
In the end, only Milan-Cortina (Italy) and Stockholm-Are (Sweden) were left to compete for the assignment of the 2026 Winter Olympics. All the other cities that had expressed interest in organizing the Winter Olympics have gradually withdrawn due to consultative referendums that expressed a negative opinion or for lack of funds.
Italy has already hosted an Olympics three times: in 1956 the Winter Olympics in Cortina, in 1960 the Summer Olympics in Rome and in 2006 the Winter Olympics in Turin. The assignment of the event to Italy would be a certificate of esteem towards the organizational skills of the Bel Paese. Sweden, on the other hand, has hosted the Olympics (summer) only once in 1912. In the last 30 years it has applied seven times to organize the Winter or Summer Olympics, but without success.
