Sony’s console should closely resemble the PlayStation 4 Slim. Some choices, however, seem to not fully convince. Here are which.
The new PlayStation 5, whose release is scheduled for fall 2020 (the latest rumors speak of October), could have a design very similar to the current PS4 Slim. And ‘what emerges from two sketches that, according to the website GixChina, come from a patent Sony.
Bozzetti that, it must be said, are almost identical to the alleged PS5 photographed a few weeks ago and this makes it more credible leak GizChina. However, it is always necessary to remember that we speak of rumors, not official news and confirmed by Sony, and that in this design there are some points that do not convince, such as the apparent lack of large ventilation grills. For the rest, the PS5 that is seen in the sketches is a kind of asymmetric PS4, which can be placed both horizontally and vertically. When vertical, however, this Sony console shows a surface in the shape of “X” unprecedented and that not everyone will like.
PS5: how it is made
Like the PS4 Slim PS5, according to these drawings, is formed by two levels, but now do not have the same perimeter: the lower one has bumps and bevels at the corners. From the drawings you can also see the PlayStation logo in the center of the console and the writing PS5 on one of the corners. On the other edge instead, there are the power button and the one to eject the Blu-Ray disc. On one of the sides there is the Sony brand and another PS5 writing, under which we find two USB ports for controllers.
What’s wrong with this PS5 design
Compared to its direct competitor, the Microsoft Xbox Series X, whose final design we already know, the Sony PlayStation 5 has very little surface area dedicated to air recirculation. While the upcoming Xbox has a huge grille that takes up the entire top of the parallelepiped-shaped console, the PS5 has only small grills.
It is known, however, that both consoles will integrate some very powerful hardware that will produce a lot of heat. If the final design of the PS5 turns out to be just as seen in these latest designs, then, the console could suffer from overheating issues during intense gaming sessions. Or it could have very powerful, and thus noisy, fans or large surface area internal heatsinks, and thus be quite heavy in the end.
