PlayStation 5 will have the best Wi-Fi connection of all

Sony has learned from the mistake made with the PS4 and for the PlayStation 5 has chosen Wi-Fi 6, to have the console with the best connection of all

The PlayStation 5 will be able to count on Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1 connectivity. These two important features for Sony’s console, making it the one with the best connection to date on the market, despite Microsoft’s Xbox Series X being more powerful, at least on paper.

The move to offer a better connection for the PS5 stems from Sony’s need not to repeat the mistake made with the previous PS4 console. The previous Sony console could count on a very solid hardware and appreciated by its customers, but the choice of a dated Wi-Fi did not prove successful. So much so that even in the later models, PS4 Pro and PS4 Slim, the company has “remedied” by improving the functionality of Wi-Fi. Precisely on connectivity Sony marks a point in the challenge to the Xbox Series X and S, which are equipped with a Wi-Fi 5 and USB-A ports with speeds of 5 Gbit/s.

PlayStation 5, the technical characteristics

After the negative experience of the previous model, Sony has equipped the PlayStation 5 with a Wi-Fi 6 802.11ax antenna with support for Bluetooth 5.1, which would have the ability to transfer data at a speed of 9.6 Gbit/s. In addition, we find a USB-C port on the front of the console and two USB-A sockets on the back, all compatible with the Super-Speed standard with transfer speeds of 10 Gbit/s. Only the USB-A port on the front of the PS5 is standard.

PS5, why connectivity matters

The first thing that jumps out at you, then, is a huge difference between the connectivity performance offered by PlayStation 5’s Wi-Fi 6 versus the PS4’s Wi-Fi 4, with maximum download speeds of 9.6 Gbit/s and 300 Mbit/s respectively. Bluetooth connectivity also improves, going from a 2.1 version to 5.1. Even compared to the Xbox Series X and S, PS5’s connectivity is superior. Microsoft’s next-gen consoles can count on a Wi-Fi 5 standard, with connection speeds of 3.5 Gbit/s, and three USB-A ports with a maximum capacity of 5 Gbit/s.

The result for PlayStation 5 is a more stable connection, even in public places or apartment buildings where the Internet is congested for those who choose to play online, as well as a more reliable connection with compatible accessories wirelessly and Bluetooth.
