The new processor for mid-range smartphones lacks nothing, the phones that will use it will certainly be “best buy”.
It’s called Dimensity 900 the new SoC from Mediatek, which is positioned just above Dimensity 800 and just below Dimensity 1000, going to fill the hole in the range of chips for mid-range smartphones from the Taiwanese manufacturer. This is a very important processor for Mediatek, but also for manufacturers of smartphones and tablets, because it offers everything you need on a modern device but at an affordable price.
Reading the technical characteristics of this chip, and especially what can do a smartphone that integrates it, you would think of the high end of the market and not the middle one. This chip, in fact, from the technical point of view uses the best technologies available today while maintaining a moderate working frequency. This means that it will not offer maximum performance, of course, but it can still be used on smartphones absolutely competitive in functionality with those equipped with an equivalent Qualcomm chip. Specifically, the Mediatek Dimensity 900 is comparable to a Qualcomm Snapdragon 768G, a chip that has been hugely successful precisely because it’s almost top-of-the-line, but costs a lot less. Today’s System on a Chip, in fact, have even excessive power for most users.
Mediatek Dimensity 900: technical specifications
Inside the Mediatek Dimensity 900 SoC there are 8 cores: 2 ARM Cortex A78 at 2.4 GHz frequency and 6 ARM Cortex A55 at 2.0 GHz frequency. The Snapdragon 768G with which it will compete to the two main cores that arrive at 2.8 GHz, but it is Cortex A76 and not A78.
While the Snapdragon is made with 7 nm manufacturing process, then, the Mediatek goes down to 6 nm and this means lower power consumption, less heat produced and longer battery life.
There is also no lack of support for fast LPDDR5-type RAM and UFS 3.1 storage, it can handle screens with refresh rates up to 120 Hz and cameras up to 108 MP, of course it has a 5G modem, Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2.
In short, from a technical standpoint the Mediatek Dimensity 900 lacks nothing that a top-of-the-line processor has: the only difference is in pure performance, which will be lower, and not in functionality, which will be identical.
Mediatek Dimensity 900: when will the first smartphones
There are no smartphone models yet that will use the new Mediatek Dimensity 900, but it’s a matter of a few weeks, if not days, before we read the first official announcements from manufacturers.
Dimensity 900 will be used for mid-range and mid-high-end devices throughout 2021, and then move onto mid-low-end ones next year.
