Do I need to install an antivirus on my computer?

Many people are convinced that antiviruses are not necessary if you pay proper attention while surfing the Internet, but this is a false myth

When we talk about computer security we all have a friend who is convinced that they don’t need an antivirus on their computer. “I’m careful with links and attachments” or “I don’t download anything and I don’t surf dangerous sites”. These are the most common phrases, but are they enough to protect our information? The idea that antivirus software is only necessary for users who are a bit absent-minded is a false myth that needs to be cleared through customs. We all need a program that allows us to increase our defenses when we surf the Internet. We live, in fact, in an era where zero-day hacker attacks are constantly on the rise. Therefore, even a careful and aware user can fall victim to an attack. Simply because every day there is a new method used by cyber criminals to infect our computers. Many people think that to fall into the trap you need to download files, click on suspicious links or install untrusted apps. But this is not the case.

Why install antivirus

HackersĀ are able to use vulnerabilities in the programs we use every day to attack us. There are vulnerabilities in Chrome, in Word, in Firefox. And on virtually every electronic device we use. Even the most widely used and seemingly trustworthy websites can be compromised. If a hacker is able to exploit these flaws for the user there are no precautions that hold. If we don’t have antivirus on our PC, installed and updated, we will end up in the hands of cyber criminals. When we are surfing on a site and a hacker exploiting a hole tries to install a keylogger or a trojan on our computer, an antivirus is the last defense system that remains. The program will detect the tampering attempt and try to defend our machine.

Why not install an antivirus

Some people have given up on an antivirus simply because they tried the wrong program. Some antivirus programs, especially the old free ones, slow down the PC and decrease the performance of the computer. Many unhappy users have given up protecting themselves with an anti-malware program. But this is not the most logical solution. The latest generation of antivirus, even the free ones, not only defend us from hackers but are easy to use and do not weigh down the PC. Besides, if we use Windows 10 we already have Windows Defender built-in. Sure it won’t be as efficient as other solutions on the market, but it’s lightweight and it’s already installed on our operating system.
