How to format Windows 10 without losing your files

Because of a malware or an installed non-compatible program we will have to format our PC to fix some problems, here’s how to do it with Windows 10

Installing an incompatible program, getting infected by a cyber attack or our computer’s performance dropping. There are several cases in which we’ll have to format our PC Windows 10. For someone it might be a new operation, but it is very simple to do.

Using the option present in Windows 10 called Keep My FIles we will be able to safely format the device without the fear of losing our documents and photos or videos saved on the computer. Basically, before formatting, the computer lets us save the most important apps and files so we can recover them once the process is complete. To get them back we won’t even have to do difficult operations, we’ll just have to log in with our username and password during reboot and we’ll find a formatted version of Windows 10 on the PC with all our documents and programs ready to use.

How to format your PC with Windows 10

To start with the formatting, first let’s look, via the search bar in the lower left corner of our desktop, for the section called PC Recovery. At this point we’ll have to make sure that we have inserted a USB key or an external hard drive on the computer, where we’ll save the files we don’t want to delete. Proceeding with the Restore operation, the operating system will ask us whether to Keep the files or Remove everything. Obviously we have to select the first option and we’re going to choose which documents and which multimedia contents we’re going to save thanks to the external hard disk or the pen drive. Once this action is done we can confirm the recovery process. At this point the PC will be restarted and it will take some time before it becomes operational again. Depending on the PC we use, it could take from thirty minutes up to an hour and a half.

After the reboot, the computer will proceed to the automatic installation of Windows 10 and we’ll have to access the operating system through our Microsoft username and password that we registered when we first signed up. At this point we’ll have to reconfigure our computer following the Windows 10 wizard (language selection, time zone, location and so on). Once this step is completed we are ready to use the computer again. In the desktop we’ll find a folder with our documents saved before formatting, while if we look for Removed Apps we’ll find a list of programs that were deleted with the restore. In this way it will be easy to understand which program has infected or slowed down our device.
