Telephoning online, how VoIP works

VoIP technology, instead of using the telephone line, uses the Internet connection to make calls

In the office or from friends, at least once almost all of us have heard of VoIP. If we work in a company it is likely that without knowing it we have also already used this technology. But let’s see what VoIP means.

To explain as clearly as possible the term VoIP we start by saying that any technology used to make a call, both incoming and outgoing, using an IP channel is defined as VoIP. But let’s take a step back, with the definition IP address in computer science and telecommunications is a numerical label that uniquely identifies a device, called host, connected to a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol as a network protocol. Specifically, however, the word VoIP is an acronym for “Voice Over IP”, or “Voice over Internet Protocol”.

What does VoIP

Explained in an even simpler way we can say that VoIP is that particular technology that allows us to make a conversation using the Internet connection instead of the normal phone line. As said at the beginning we use this technology every day but we don’t know it. Since several years, in fact, most of the national voice and adsl providers transmit using Voice Over IP. This means that VoIp is also easy to use and does not imply any discomfort even for those who are not particularly familiar with the Internet. On the contrary, this technology has numerous advantages. Among the most famous services that use this system there is surely Skype.

Vantages of VoIP

We start from the advantage that surely more than all interests the consumers: VoIP costs less than the “traditional” telephone network. And this system costs less also to the suppliers seen the smaller infrastructural expenses. VoIP doesn’t make a difference between local and long distance calls, and lowers the price of international conversations. Moreover VoIP allows you to keep several phone numbers on one phone, save voice messages on your computer or even make completely free phone calls between users of the same network.
