New discovery on the aging process of hair: after a period of stress can become gray but the process can be reversed with a period of relaxation such as holidays
Grey hair is frowned upon by many people, who would like to keep their original color for a long time to look younger. What’s more, periods of particular stress, as it is known, can accelerate the aging process of the hair and change the color before it should. Until now it was thought that this process was irreversible, or that there was no turning back, but a new study has reversed the situation.
Hair from colored to gray and vice versa: the new discovery
Thanks to periods of serenity and relaxation, gray hair can regain its original color, or promote a process of natural repigmentation.
The scientists, in order to hunt for evidence of the innate ability of hair to repigment itself in a “natural” way, have developed a computer model capable of showing how gray hairs multiply over time due to stressful events.
They are 323, explained the scientists, the proteins that allow to “trace” and therefore to go back to the history of the color of a hair and crossing these data with the hair of 14 participants in the study, the researchers were able to establish that the phases of serenity, lived without stress, allow instead to find the initial color.
A behavior can affect hair color
The transformation found by the researchers is a sign that individuals’ behavior has a direct impact on their hair and can change its color. Thus, among the people who participated in the study, it turned out how after two weeks of vacation was found to change the color of some of their hair.
Ayelet Rosenberg, lead author of the research, explained, “We were surprised to see at what point the vacations can have an impact in reversing the aging process. Even though only five hairs regained their original color, it was enough to show that their bleaching is reversible.”
“Someday doctors may use hair pigments as a diagnostic tool, taking advantage of our method that links white hair to stress and vice versa,” she concluded. This Columbia University study, in fact, is already considered an important starting point for a revolution in the field of hair care in therapeutic key.
