How Facial Recognition Works

This is a biometric tool, like fingerprints, that allows you to unlock a device with total security using the person’s face

More and more companies are employing facial recognition technologies on their devices. These are tools, such as fingerprints, that allow you to unlock a device, verifying the identity of the person based on some unique biometric elements.

In the case of facial recognition, somatic features are the factors considered by the sensors and algorithms of the machine. After the novelty of the fingerprint reader, the latest generation of smartphones are starting to come to market with this new technology. Samsung, for example, announced the Galaxy Note 8, a phablet that integrates facial recognition alongside iris scanning. But the South Korean company is not the only one to use this technology, other companies are also implementing it on their devices.

How does facial recognition

Facial recognition mainly relies on a series of intelligent algorithms, which broadly work by performing gradual actions. First, the software needs to identify the position of the framed person’s face. Next, the program needs to map the face, determining the distance between the most important facial points. For example, the computer maps the distance between the eyes, the size of the jaw, the position of the nose or the distance between the cheekbones.

Having done this, the points are then transformed into coordinates, which contain the information about the person’s face. The data is compared with other faces and face types. In this way, the program is also able to determine whether the face belongs to a woman or a man. In addition, it can also understand the mood of the person framed.

Facial recognition has been greatly improved, becoming more accurate and reliable, so much so that, as many experts suggest, it is very likely that in the not-too-distant future, the system will be destined to replace the fingerprint reader on upcoming devices.
