There are hundreds of channels on Digital Terrestrial, how can you remember them all? It is impossible, but there is a simple trick to have the list always available
As all Digital Terrestrial TV viewers know very well, periodically it is necessary to retune the decoder of the TV (or the external one) to “hook” new frequencies to the right number of the remote control and continue to watch their favorite channels without having to learn a new numbering every time. In a switch off period like this one, when retuning is very frequent, automatic numbering has been a real salvation for everyone.
It’s called, technically, LCN: Logical Channel Numbering. LCN numbering is so important (without it any broadcaster could occupy any channel) that it is not free but, on the contrary, rigidly established by the Ministry of Economic Development. It is the State, in fact, that grants the frequencies but also the positions on the remote control where viewers can find the channels they are looking for. As we know, however, broadcasters come and go and, for this reason, LCN numbering must be periodically updated. Once again, the Ministry of Economic Development takes care of this, following a corresponding resolution by AGCOM (the Italian Communications Guarantee Authority).
LCN list update: who decides channel numbers
The latest LCN update dates back to 19 November, and is based on an AGCOM resolution of 21 April 2021. The new numbering takes into account the latest changes in the DVB television market: the beginning of the transition to Mpeg-4 encoding (which does not, however, involve either a change in frequency or numbering) and the beginning of the so-called “refarming” of frequencies in the 700 MHz band.
The new numbering is not very different from the previous one. The numbers from 0 to 99 are again reserved for national broadcasters and the so-called “quality local broadcasting linked to the territory” (numbers from 10 to 19 and from 10 to 20). (numbers from 10 to 19 and from 71 to 99). These local broadcasters do not broadcast on the whole national territory, therefore you will not find them in this list because they vary from one Italian Region to another.
The numbers from 71 to 74 and from 171 to 174 have instead been reserved for consortia and agreements of local broadcasters that broadcast the same programming on several areas of the national territory (and therefore need to do so with the same numbering). Again, for the same reasons as above, these broadcasters are not listed in the new LCN list.
How to save the LCN list on your smartphone
If you often forget the number of a channel you would like to watch, having this list handy could be very useful.
We recommend, in this case, to read this article from your Android smartphone and then tap on the main menu of the browser (the one with the three dots, top right) and choose “Add to Home Screen”. You will be able to choose the name under which you want to save the article (and therefore the list).
After that, a link to the list will be added in the first available free space on your phone’s Home screen. You can then hold down the icon and drag it to where you find it most convenient. When you need to find the LCN number of a TV channel, just tap on the saved link.
