Spotify Plus: how the new cheap subscription works

With the new subscription the ads remain but some of the strong limitations present in the completely free version disappear: is Spotify Plus worth it?

The music streaming platform Spotify is developing a new cheap subscription. It’s called Spotify Plus and integrates part of the main features present in the different paid subscriptions in addition to some of the features of the free offer available to all users through the simple free membership.

Already in 2018, the Swedish company has included among the possibilities of access to its rich library with a free plan that, however, has limitations. In fact, here the user cannot skip more than six songs in the same hour, selecting them, moreover, only among those included in 15 well-known playlists made by Spotify, with additions chosen by the editorial staff or by special algorithms. The other songs that end up in the listener’s headphones are the result of the platform’s automatic sorting that takes place once the “play” button is pressed. To this, then, is added the presence of advertising messages. With Spotify Plus, some of these restrictions are removed, improving the user experience for a low price.

Spotify Plus, how it works

Like the completely free profile, Spotify Plus is supported by advertising. The cost to access it is, in any case, really small compared to the alternatives offered by the service. The short automatic commercials continue, but the interaction is totally different.

The difference is mainly in the way of listening: there is no limit in skipping songs, with an unlimited skip of what you don’t like to listen to. The same goes for the music selection, no longer bound by the existing collections but with total freedom of choice within the vast archive of 70 million files, including 2.9 million podcasts, which belong to the application’s heritage.

Spotify Plus, how much will it cost?

There is still no certain news about the official launch date of “Plus”. Currently, the company is testing users’ approach to this particular type of subscription. Many web surfers have stated that they have encountered on the net sponsorships with slightly different rates between them, a technique that will undoubtedly help Spotify to establish the correct value of the service.

The figure that, at least for now, should approach the final one is $0.99 per month, about 0.83 euro cents at the current exchange rate. That’s a little less than 1/10th of the cost of the premium version, which allows the individual user to take advantage of all the features already built in, from skipping to playlists, to downloading music and podcasts to smartphones, tablets and Apple Watch.

Spotify Plus, when is it coming?

Although Spotify has opened up to new forms of subscription, confirming it through a spokesperson, he stressed that there is no certainty for the moment about the final form of the plan. Only after the completion of the testing phase will it be possible to have the confirmation of the introduction of Plus, its price and extension, including Italy.
