Why your PC won’t install Windows 10 updates

Many users are still reporting problems with the installation of the 2020 May Update, the latest update available for Windows 10

The 2020 May Update, i.e. the first major semi-annual Windows 10 update of 2020, has been available for several weeks now but many users are unable to install it. In fact, reports about it abound on Reddit and Microsoft’s official support forum.

Users claim they tried to install the update, but received an error message: “This PC cannot be updated to Windows 10. Your PC settings are not yet supported on this version of Windows 10. Microsoft is working to support your settings soon. No action is required. Windows Update will automatically offer this version of Windows 10 when these settings are supported.” A message that doesn’t offer much guidance as to why you can’t update Windows 10, so much so that users have flocked online to look for answers, is that it closely resembles the “Your device is not ready” message that many users received in late May.

Windows 10 won’t update: what’s going on

From the messages posted by users it would seem that this problem affects different types of configurations, with various older versions of Windows: 1809, 1903 and 1909. One Reddit user claims to have received the message after trying to switch from a previous Home version of Windows 10 to the 2004 version (i.e. the one with the May Update) of Windows 10 Pro. Other users have had problems while staying in the Home version. The problem seems to be more frequent if you try to update Windows via Windows Update: 30% of attempts would fail.

How to unblock the update to May Update 2020

On Microsoft’s official forum an employee of the company gave some more explanation: the message could appear in case of various hardware incompatibility issues. To solve it, therefore, the first step is to update all the drivers of your PC’s components and peripherals to their latest versions.

Then you have to go to Settings > Updates & Security > Windows Security > Open Windows Security > Device Security > Core Isolation. Here you need to disable Core Isolation and right after that, try to upgrade to Windows 10 May Update again. According to Microsoft in most cases this maneuver is enough to unlock the update.
