Windows 10, how to control your PC remotely

Windows 10 offers its users a tool to control your PC remotely: it’s called Microsoft’s Remote Desktop Connection

In the times of smart working, controlling your PC remotely can prove to be a very useful tool, especially if you need to receive assistance while you’re working. Not everyone knows that Microsoft has integrated in Windows 10 the Remote Desktop Connection tool, which through the configuration of the PC allows you to access it even from afar.

The Remote Desktop Connection program from Microsoft is integrated in all versions of Windows and is also available for other operating systems, including macOS, iOS, iPadOS and Android. To make this tool work between PCs that are not on the same local network, you’ll need to pair it with third-party tools. It should be noted that the full version is only present in Windows Pro, while for Home versions there is a version that only allows connection between devices in a configured local network, but does not allow you to receive remote assistance.

Remote Desktop Connection, how to configure the PC to be controlled

Before starting to use the Microsoft app we have to check that the PC that is part of our local network is configured for remote connection. To do this, click on the Windows Explorer, right-click on the “This PC” item and select “Properties”. A window will open that contains information about the system you are using.

In the left column you will see the “Remote connection settings” item, clicking on it will open a window and you should check that the “Allow computer control from remote locations” box is checked. If not, check it. Then click on the “Advanced” button and check that “Allow computer control from remote locations” is checked, if not, check it as well and press “Ok” to make the changes permanent.

In the Pro version of Windows, there will be an additional item in the “System Properties” window that allows you to choose whether or not to allow remote connections to the computer. The advice is to check the box “Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network-Level Authentication”, because it is the most secure option. Save the settings by clicking on “Apply” and then “Ok”.

Once you have given your permission for remote access, you will need to configure the PC you want to access remotely to have a public IP so that those who need assistance can connect from the Internet. To do this you need a dedicated service, such as TightVNC or No-IP, which allow you to create a free account for the PC you want to control, choosing the username, password and defining the IP. Using these programs on your PC, you can then enable it to connect remotely and make it recognizable on the Internet.

Windows 10, how to enable Remote Desktop Connection

Once the PC you want to control is properly configured, you can use Windows 10 Remote Desktop Connection. To open the program, which can be found in all versions of Windows, you’ll just have to click on “Start”, scroll to the “Windows Accessories” item, and select “Remote Desktop Connection”. A window will then open in which to enter the user name chosen for the PC you want to access remotely and its public IP. Then by pressing the “Connect” button, you’ll finally be able to access the computer you want. The program also lets you choose how you want the remote desktop to be displayed, for example minimizing or maximizing the screen, configure the sound settings of the PC you are connecting to or the connected devices.
