Spaces and Camera Effects: Facebook bets on virtual and augmented reality

Camera Effect Platform and Facebook Spaces are the most important news presented by Mark Zuckerberg during F8, the annual event dedicated to developers

Like every year, Mark Zuckerberg gathered developers in San Jose for F8, an event organized to present the most interesting news regarding Facebook and the products made by the Menlo Park company. And for 2017, the most important novelties concern virtual reality and augmented reality.

Facebook’s strategy is quite clear: destroy Snapchat. After taking a cue from the yellow ghost’s platform to create Instagram Stories and Facebook Stories, now the Menlo Park company is ready for the next step: anticipate Snapchat and convince Millennials to leave the platform and embrace Facebook. And to do so, it has unveiled Camera Effect Platform and Facebook Spaces, two new tools that will allow users to use virtual and augmented reality to make their images and videos unique.

Developers will be able to leverage the two new platforms made by Facebook to create custom applications and filters to be integrated within the application. The social platform wants to permanently change the way people communicate, saying goodbye to text messages and embracing photos and videos. As Mark Zuckerberg himself said, human communication will become more and more visual and Facebook wants to anticipate the future with Camera Effect Platform and Facebook Spaces

How Camera Effect Platform works

The camera will be more and more at the center of Facebook’s development plans. In the coming years, the social network will be used more and more by mobile and the company from Menlo Park doesn’t want to be unprepared. Camera Effect Platform is divided into two tools: Frames Studio e AR Studio.

Frames Studio è un editor online, già disponibile in tutto il mondo, che permette agli utenti di modificare l’immagine profilo o le foto da pubblicare sulle Pagine Facebook utilizzando la realtà aumentata. L’azienda di Menlo Park ha pubblicato anche delle linee guida da seguire per utilizzare al meglio lo strumento.

AR Studio, invece, è una piattaforma dedicata principalmente agli sviluppatori e per il momento è stata rilasciato solamente in versione beta. Lo strumento combina attraverso un algoritmo i dati raccolti dalla fotocamera con i contenuti realizzati dagli sviluppatori. Con AR Studio sarà più semplice creare dei filtri con la realtà aumentata da usare mentre si scattano le immagini. Not only augmented reality. During F8, Mark Zuckerberg also presented Facebook Spaces, a virtual reality application that will be available immediately in beta version on the Oculus Rift, Facebook’s VR visor. The application is designed for friends who live hundreds of miles away and never have the chance to meet: with Facebook Spaces they will be able to do so in virtual reality. Each user will be able to create their own personal avatar and use it during calls. Video calls will start on Facebook Messenger and then move to Facebook Spaces. Within the application it will be possible to see all the content on the social network: from panoramic photos to 360-degree videos. In addition, users will be able to customize their space by designing new content or using those offered by Facebook Spaces. The application is just the first step of the revolution put in place by the social network: in the coming years the way of communicating will be completely different.

Facebook also presented other news that directly affect developers and all those who use the social network for work.

Developer Circles is a new program that will allow all developers to communicate with each other, to exchange ideas and get advice on how to make new applications for Facebook. Gli utenti potranno organizzare anche degli eventi offline per conoscersi meglio, fare amicizia e creare nuove relazioni.

Places Graph, invece, è una nuova piattaforma messa a disposizione da Facebook che raccoglie oltre 140 milioni di informazioni sui ristoranti, parchi pubblici, bar e negozi. Gli utenti possono trovare informazioni come l’indirizzo, il numero di telefono e le recensioni dei consumatori. In questo modo per le persone sarà più semplice scoprire dove andare e decidere cosa fare.

Instagram funzionerà anche offline

Oltre a Facebook, c’ stato spazio anche per Instagram. Il social dedicato agli amanti della fotografia funzionerà anche offline: gli utenti potranno creare il proprio post e pubblicarlo quando avranno la connessione a internet. La nuova funzionalità sarà disponibile inizialmente solo per gli utenti Android.
