How to protect your social account from hackers

Cyber criminals are increasingly targeting social media, here are the basic steps to take to increase the security of our profile

Hackers are increasingly targeting social networks. They take advantage of small mistakes made by users to appropriate login credentials and steal all the most confidential information, or to infect our friends with malware through a message.

Unfortunately, there are some simple steps to put into practice to improve the cyber security of our social profiles. Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Pinterest, and Instagram are the favorite platforms of cyber criminals. The reason is very simple: they are the most used. Moreover, the more followers and subscribers to our channel we have, the greater the risk that a hacker will try to tamper with our profile. But even users with few friends but who post a lot of information, such as photos, addresses or personal data are at risk of attack.

How to protect your account

The first action to take to increase the security of our profile is to set the two-factor authentication. We can do this on pretty much any social and even other services like Amazon or WhatsApp. Secondly when we enter a password we do not choose a short and easily decipherable access key, it is better to use a passphrase. Also, it is strongly discouraged to use a unique password for all our social accounts. This way a hacker if decrypted our passphrase key would have access to all our profiles. Managing all passphrases for Twitter, Facebook or Instagram is not easy, so it is better to use a password management app. Beware of phishing attacks, which can cleverly circumvent two-factor authentication. We therefore always avoid clicking on links and attachments in our email inboxes or within the most popular messaging apps, such as WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger.
