The smartphone is not always a nuisance in the car. If exploited properly, the mobile device can be useful for safety
From the greatest source of distraction when driving to a safety system that can protect and save lives.
The smartphone’s strange destiny: often and often blamed (rightly) as the cause of many road accidents, today it could be the life-saving device we’ve been waiting for.
Different companies, in fact, are working on life-saving safety systems based on cell phones or similar technologies: by exploiting the various sensors inside a latest-generation cell phone, in fact, they are able to prevent the causes of an accident, disabling in some cases the most dangerous (and most distracting) features of mobile devices. Not only: thanks to various accelerometers and gyroscopes, it is also possible to automatically warn the rescuers and acquaintances in case of an accident. This way, even if the accident should occur in an unfrequented location, you can be reached in no time at all.
The life-saving Santino
To ensure that smartphones stop being a source of distraction (according to ANIA data, using a cell phone behind the wheel increases the likelihood of being involved in an accident fourfold), an Italian insurance company has developed the Santino Safety System, a safety device that mixes the sacred and the profane, hi-tech and tradition.

Behind the emoji of a saint, in fact, hides an NFC chip (an acronym for Near Field Communication, a wireless proximity communication system) capable of interacting directly with the smartphone. The digital saint can be attached, just like the “normal” ones, on the dashboard of the car and is linked to an application for iOS systems. After downloading the app on your device and installing it, just pass the smartphone in front of the SantinoSafetySystem to activate it. At that point, Santino will deactivate the ringtone and notifications, answering in place of the person driving: a text message will alert the caller that the person being sought is driving and cannot be disturbed.
The motorcycle with the emergency call
From BMW, however, comes a motorcycle capable of saving the lives of dozens and dozens of motorcyclists. The BMW K 1600 GT is BMW’s first connected motorcycle that, thanks to the presence of a Vodafone Internet of Things SIM on board, allows riders to take advantage of the German manufacturer’s “eCall” emergency call service.

In the event of an accident, the BMW Motorrad ConnectedRide system is activated, which forwards an emergency call to the German manufacturer’s security system, complete with geographic coordinates of where the accident occurred. Depending on the severity of the accident, BMW’s service center will alert the emergency services and try to contact the motorcyclist using the integrated audio system to ascertain his or her condition.
