Facebook goes dark: dark mode arrives

Facebook has started working on dark mode for the Android app as well. For the moment, the development is still in the early stages

To the long list of applications that are developing a dark mode now you have to add Facebook as well. The indiscretion comes from Jane Manchun Wong who managed to get a screenshot of Facebook’s Android app in night mode. For the moment there is not much news available: the development of dark mode would seem to be still in the early stages and would affect only some sections of the app.

The Menlo Park company is investing heavily in this new feature. At the beginning of the year it released the dark mode for Messenger, while on WhatsApp it has been in the works for a few months (the iOS version should be almost ready, while the Android one is slightly delayed). Now the work has started for the Facebook app as well, but the timing for the release is uncertain. Facebook has a lot of sections and a lot of work is needed, both on the development and design side, to adapt the app to the dark mode.

How Facebook changes with night mode

Users should rest assured that nothing will change in terms of functionality. The Facebook application will remain the same: you will be able to continue publishing images, videos, posts, participate in groups and create new ones. The biggest change will be in terms of user interface. From the image posted by Jane Manchun Wong you can understand the change in style: the blue and white that are now predominant within the app will be replaced by black and gray.

Black will be used as the background color, while gray will characterize the icons and the various sections of the Facebook Android app.

Why Facebook is developing dark mode

The dark mode is the big news of this early 2019. All the major software houses are developing a dark mode of their main apps. Google and Apple have even decided to include it by default within Android 10 Q and iOS 13, the two upcoming OS updates.

The night mode should make it easier to read content when using your smartphone in bed without straining your eyes. But that’s not all. In smartphones with AMOLED screen there is a definite battery saving.

When is night mode coming to Facebook

There is no official date for the release of dark mode on Facebook. According to Jane Manchun Wong, work has just begun on the Android app only. It’s hard to make predictions, but we’ll most likely have to wait until 2020 to see dark mode on Facebook.
