Apple enters the video streaming market. The new subscription to watch movies, TV series, news and more is coming. Here’s how it will work.
Apple is preparing to become a direct competitor to Netflix, the undisputed leader in streaming movies and TV series. The Cupertino-based company has scheduled for March 25 in California the official presentation of its new subscription of news and other video content.
During the event there will probably be several Hollywood stars, including actress Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Garner, Reese Witherspoon and director JJ Abrams. According to some rumors, Apple’s video streaming service will be very similar to Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. In fact, it will include both historical and blockbuster products as well as new productions funded by Apple. The company has already produced dozens of TV shows, which will surely be integrated within the subscription. The novelty will be available by the summer. Here are what rumors and news leaked so far.
What will Apple’s streaming video subscription look like?
First of all, there won’t just be movies and TV series. The service will also include a Premium News plan, integrated with the Apple News app, which will allow customers to subscribe to a bundle of titles by paying a monthly fee. Some newspapers and publishing companies have shown reluctance related to the dissemination of their content by Apple, but the situation is in flux. According to rumors, the company has decided to focus on streaming digital content to compensate for a drop in iPhone sales, also due to recent malfunctions. Wall Street has also speculated that Apple will not stop at video streaming, but will increase its offerings and eventually unite all services within a single subscription. This process would be very similar to the one conducted for Amazon Prime, which was created for online sales and then integrated with other offerings.
Apple, under the guidance of Sony Pictures, has been working on the streaming service for several years now. Finally, the project is coming to light, and it will surely be immediately integrated within Apple devices, such as the iPad and Apple TV. The real novelty compared to the current landscape, is that Apple users will also be able to access content from other providers, such as Amazon and Starz, but paying a separate fee.
Finally, the News service will also include a subscription to a magazine, tested for months by Apple employees, which will be distributed with the iOS 12.2 update scheduled for April.
