Optimus, the modular 3D printer that doubles as a milling machine. Photo

Optimus is a 3D printer that also includes a laser cutter and CNC milling machine. Available on Indiegogo, it costs about €1500

Imagine a 3D printer that can do more than just make things. And imagine it scalable to the kind of work you have in mind. Imagine it no more, because it’s the Optimus, a modular 3D printer launching on Indiegogo.

Optimus is a 3-in-1 machine. In addition to the classic 3D printer function, it’s also a laser cutter and CNC router. In practice, this machine is not only used to create your own products but can also be used to modify existing ones, thanks to laser cutting, and to customize an infinite number of objects to your liking. On Indiegogo, it’s described as a printer for creating objects that can’t be found anywhere else on the market, and the Optimus page shows a bright, customizable chessboard made entirely with the 3D printer (as you can see in the photo gallery).

How the Optimus 3D Printer Works

(Taken from YouTube)

Optimus is a 3D printer that combines several machines, so it can be very useful for small and medium-sized businesses. Best of all, it’s flexible because it’s modular, which means it can be mounted in two different ways depending on the project at hand. The machinery can be mounted vertically or horizontally. The former is useful for 3D printing work the latter for engraving and milling. It is quite easy to disassemble and reassemble Optimus, on the site it is indicated that the whole operation takes a maximum of ten minutes. In addition, on Indiegogo, precisely because of the ease of use, the modular printer is recommended for both experienced users and designers and newcomers to the industry. In fact, it is managed directly from a very intuitive smartphone app. Some may think that the 3D printer is fragile, but in fact on Indiegogo you can see practical demonstrations of the resistance of the machine.

Shipments and cost

Obviously being in the launch phase on Indiegogo you have to wait for the manufacturer to reach the target set for the fundraising campaign. Optimus should begin to be delivered at the end of March and shipments are guaranteed worldwide. So if a small Italian company wants to buy it, there is no problem whatsoever. There are several Optimus models: the complete one, the 3-in-1, costs just over 1,500 dollars (at today’s exchange rate just over 1400 euros). La versione senza il laser cutter costa 1.359 dollari (1280 euro). La versione senza la fresa 1159 dollari (poco meno di 1100 euro). Mentre la versione base, non modulare, sfiora i mille dollari.
