Spotify is testing an inexpensive shared premium subscription

Spotify Premium Duo is a new type of subscription the streaming service is testing in some countries. Here’s how it works

Spotify is doing it in two. The streaming service  is testing in some countries Spotify Premium Duo, a type of subscription that aims to increase the pool of paying users. How? By proposing a monthly formula of €12.49 for two separate accounts belonging to people who live at the same address.

No advertisements, playlists that are shared but can be listened to separately by both users, zero limits in scrolling through the tracks: Spotify’s new proposal is cheaper than buying two separate Premium accounts (€9.99 each) or a family plan for five accounts at €14.99 per month. So, if you’re a couple or roommates, it could be for you.

How does Spotify Premium Duo work?

Currently limited to Colombia, Chile, Denmark, Ireland and Poland, Spotify’s new subscription enhances the premium experience.

The competitive price and the ability to keep two separate accounts with a minimum of convergence, make it a much preferable solution to traditional password sharing: the two accounts included in Premium Duo are independent from the point of view of listening (each has its own playlists) and the main account pays the subscription for two at a discount compared to what you would pay for two Premium accounts separately.

The Duo option can also be adopted by those who are already subscribers: the streaming platform will keep your favorite music while maintaining music library and playlists.

Who should subscribe to Premium Duo?

As the page describing the subscription states, Spotify Premium Duo is designed for “couples living under the same roof”.

If you’re not students but share the same address, Spotify Premium Duo can be a great alternative: for those who decide to subscribe to the formula, Spotify offers the dedicated Duo Mix playlist, available only to Premium Duo members and regularly updated with suggested music based on both users’ listening history. If you don’t want to be included, simply specify it in your account settings.

“Premium Duo is part of Spotify’s commitment to continually exploring new ways to improve the Premium experience,” said a Spotify spokesperson in a note; indeed, there’s no shortage of change and the streaming world is growing fast on innovation.
