Research from Newcastle University has shown how hackers only need to know a little information about our account to trigger a scam
Buy online, a convenient and fast way to save money. But will it also be safe? If you think: “yes, just buy on the right sites”, you’re off the track. Thanks to new systems, in fact, cyber criminals using e-commerce information can steal your credit card details in six seconds.
Steal a CVV or CVC in just six seconds.
According to research by Newcastle University, there is a huge security hole in Visa credit cards. MasterCard users, on the other hand, are not affected by this hacking attack. Cyber criminals, using the same system tested by the researchers, just need to know some information of our card. For example: the number and the expiration date. These two pieces of information are enough for the system to trace in six seconds the security code needed to authorize a purchase. And this is not just a university experiment because thefts carried out in this way have already been recorded on the Net.

This technique has also been used on 20 thousand Tesco Bank accounts, and all of them have been cleaned out without the users noticing anything. In this case, in addition to the account number, simple information such as the postal code or address of the cardholder was sufficient. To avoid running into scams like this one, there are several steps to take. Make sure that the e-commerce site is safe. To do this we check if the page of the payments is protected, that is if the URL begins with the wording https. We avoid entering our credit card information on various sites, in conversations on instant messaging services or over the phone. If we make frequent online purchases, we frequently check our credit card statements to verify any charges we have posted.
