It’s called Project Pulsar and it’s the smart fridge that Amazon has been designing for the past two years: it can do a lot of things, but not necessarily everyone would want it in their home
According to Business Insider reports, Amazon is designing a fridge and, of course, it will be smart and with Alexa voice commands. But that’s not all, because it will also integrate some of the most advanced technologies of the electronics giant, even more advanced than those just shown with the Amazon Astro all-rounder.
The technology will be that of Amazon Go stores, the stores that Amazon has opened in the United States where you buy without going through the cashier: the user identifies himself at the entrance with a facial scan and then is tracked during his tour among the shelves, recording everything he puts in the cart and charging the bill on his credit card. The new smart fridge would currently be in an advanced stage of development, codenamed “Project Pulsar.” According to Business Insider, this project has already been going on for two years, with a development budget of $50 million per year. What will this fridge be able to do? Much more than we imagine.
From Amazon Go to the smart fridge
In the Amazon Go stores the user is not only monitored when he puts something in the cart, but also when he takes it out and when he stands in front of a shelf and looks indecisively at the available products.
In this way Amazon collects a lot of information on the propensity to buy of each user, on what convinces him immediately and what instead does not convince him much and, then, uses all this data to send him personalized suggestions on the next shopping.
The smart fridge will have inside a computer vision system that will do more or less the same thing. Not only will it be able to alert you when you’re running low on a particular item, but it will also study your movements in front of the fridge. You know when you stand in front of the fridge for minutes at a time without knowing what to eat or cook? Here, Amazon’s smart fridge will give you some suggestions based on what you have put in the fridge, or taken from the fridge, most often.
Amazon smart fridge: when it comes
Business Insider is still not sure that this project will see the light: according to the newspaper, it is still possible that Amazon will take a step back and cancel the project of the smart fridge.
The success of this home appliance, on the other hand, would not even be obvious. The problems would be mainly two: the social acceptance, not at all taken for granted, of having a fridge that observes you with cameras and the price, which certainly will not be low at all.
