Thanks to the iTunes app we can create a ringtone with any song we have in our music library, here’s how to do it
Since the dawn of cell phones the most fun way to personalize your mobile device has been ringtones. Having the summer hit or an evergreen as a notification of an incoming call is one way as any to make your smartphone unique. And the same is true even if we have an iPhone.
On the iPhone, in addition to using one song as a ringtone, we can also set different songs based on the people who are calling us. In this way, depending on the music we hear, we will already know who is calling us, even before we take the smartphone out of our pocket. Setting and changing a ringtone is a really simple process, although it requires a couple of steps to be done carefully. The first thing we’ll have to do is choose a song on iTunes. This will then be the one we’ll use as our ringtone. To do this, open iTunes on your Mac or other PC and go to the section called Music.
Choose song
Once you find the song you want in your music library, right-click on the name of the song. This will open a pop-up menu from which we will select Options. At this point we’ll have to select the thirty seconds of the song that will be set as the ringtone. Any ringtone, in fact, cannot last longer than 30 seconds. With this function we can still select our favorite part of the song or the whole chorus. Once the editing is done, go to the top of the screen and look for the Convert item.
Set Ringtone
Now select with the mouse the new 30-second track and right-click on it and select Show on Finder from the pop-up menu. In this way we will have duplicated the two versions of the song. Now we will have the classic song and its ringtone version. Usually the name is the same except for a final 1 that distinguishes the reduced version. Also, the format of the ringtone is almost always .m4a. At this point, in order to use the song as a ringtone on the iPhone, we’ll have to convert the file to an .m4r format. To do this, just click on the track with the right button and rename the song by choosing the option “convert to .m4r”. At this point we go to iTunes and delete the track in .m4a 30 seconds from the music library. Be careful not to delete the track from our PC but only from iTunes. At this point we go to the section of iTunes called Ringtones.
Sync your iPhone
At this point we are just a step away from having our favorite song as a ringtone on the iPhone. Let’s connect your Apple home phone to your Mac or PC. Then go to the section of iTunes called Ringtones and from the sidebar on the left put a check mark next to the entries Synchronize Ringtones and All Ringtones and click on the button Apply (located at the bottom right). If you don’t want to synchronize all the custom ringtones, but only the one you just created, put the check mark next to the item Selected ringtones and choose only the preferred track. At this point we can disconnect the smartphone. So let’s take the applephone and go to Settings. Here we will have to go first to the Sounds section or then to the Ringtones section. In the list of songs available as a call notification we select our favorite song and that’s it.
