Italy’s hard punch against online piracy: more sites shut down

The list includes torrent sites and streaming movie platforms. According to AGCOM data at the moment more than 300 pirate sites would have been blocked

The fight against online piracy in Italy is getting tougher and tougher. After the operations conducted by the Guardia di Finanza against some illegal sites, the Italian control forces add other websites to the black list. The reason is always the same: copyright infringement.

According to TorrentFreak, some of the main Italian Internet Service Providers closed down the pirated websites. The ISPs would have accepted the requests received directly from the owners of the violated contents. Among the numerous blocked URLs, the list includes mainly torrent sites and other streaming movie platforms. The new restrictive measure confirms the strong commitment of Italian institutions in trying to eradicate piracy from the Internet. At the moment, according to data released by AGCCOM, the Authority for Guarantees in Communications, the number of blocked URLs would amount to about 300.

The AGCOM’s hard fist

Among the operators of the illegal affected include, for example, some platforms for video games, such as mega-wii.com and games.torrentsnack.com, others for movies, such as ddlhqfilm.com. From today they will no longer be accessible. In fact, according to the Italian law against online piracy, once AGCOM receives a removal request, Internet Service Providers have up to two days to block the “incriminated” site.

Will it really help?

While on the one hand the recent measures show the tightening of the battle on the side of copyright, on the other hand they raise some doubts about the actual effectiveness of these actions, especially in the long run. As it often happens, it is very likely that online piracy will find other ways to get around the blocks wanted by the various institutions.
