Between the night of December 31 and January 1, more than 75 billion greeting messages were sent on WhatsApp, marking a new record for the app
The hours leading up to midnight on January 1, 2018 were experienced with particular anxiety by users. Due to a WhatsApp server crash, the instant messaging app did not work for an hour: from 20:00 to 21:00. Needless to say, on Twitter the hashtag #whatsappdown immediately jumped to the first position of the Trending Topic and thousands of users have reported the malfunction on the Internet.
The problem, however, did not stop users from using the instant messaging application on New Year’s Eve. From WhatsApp they let it be known that more than 75 billion messages were exchanged to exchange greetings, marking a new record for the instant messaging application. The previous record had always been recorded during New Year’s Day, but in 2017 (on that occasion the messages had been 63 billion).
What kind of messages were sent on New Year’s Day 2017 on WhatsApp
Among the 75 billion messages sent by users on the night between December 31 and January 1 there are also a lot of images and videos. According to data released by WhatsApp staff, images were 13 billion, while the greeting videos were 5 billion. Not to mention the voice notes that surely will have been used a lot. Extraordinary numbers that show that WhatsApp continues to be the most used instant messaging application by users and that the continuous new features introduced by programmers do nothing but improve the service. And 2018 is shaping up to be a very important year for the application: in the first days of January, a new Android beta update will be released that will allow users to record short video notes. If the feature will be appreciated by users (and it has all the credentials to be a killer app) it will debut in the official version of the app as well.
