Generally speaking, there is currently no completely foolproof protection system. However, some are more secure than others. Here’s which ones to choose
Smartphones now contain a large part of our lives: leaving them unattended is extremely dangerous. Not setting up a security system to prevent anyone from accessing mobile devices without authorization, for example, is very risky indeed.
Companies have made numerous security systems available in recent years with which users can lock their phones. Alongside the classic passwords and PIN codes, biometric recognition technologies have recently been very much in vogue. The most widely used, which is not missing on any new generation smartphone, is the fingerprint sensor, which provides devices with an important level of protection. In theory, as we will see later, only the legitimate owner can access the phone. Unlocking systems using iris or facial recognition are also appearing.
No system is foolproof
Some smartphone models also allow you to use your voice to access the smartphone. There are also methods that unlock the phone when the user arrives at a certain place, such as home or office.
But what is the best system? Answering this question is not that easy. Each of the technologies offers a different level of protection. Generally speaking, it would be best to say that no system is completely secure.
Fingerprints, for example, could be stolen and used to unlock the victim’s device. Some have shown that it is possible to trace unique finger marks directly from a photo.
So could images be used to fool facial recognition and iris sensors. We’re only talking about potential and proven risks, but putting them into practice requires special means in the hands of experts only.
Voice unlock systems could be bypassed by recording the smartphone owner or by shaping audio through some sophisticated programs. Over the years, all of these technologies are becoming more secure, but they continue to be non-infallible.
Biometric methods leverage the uniqueness of the elements they use. Paradoxically, this trait could be a very serious danger to users. Think about fingerprints. If they were somehow intercepted by hackers, they could no longer be used. They cannot be changed like passwords or PIN codes.
The safest method
According to many experts, it would seem that the safest method to protect the smartphone is to use either a password or a PIN code. Obviously, it is necessary to create complex alphanumeric credentials, avoiding being seen by others while they are entered to access the phone. Guessing them for hackers, in fact, is not easy. The best technique, however, to unlock the smartphone is to combine several protection systems.
