E-invoicing and… environmentally friendly: the benefits for the environment

The introduction of e-invoicing has not only provided benefits for companies and customers. The environment has also benefited

Although the initial reception was not the best, electronic invoicing has opened up completely new scenarios for the millions of companies and professionals who have been using it since January 1, 2019 (almost 4 million, according to data released by the Ministry of Economy and Finance in the first days of 2020).

Freelance professionals and small and medium-sized businesses have been able to speed up invoicing times and, thanks to the use of management-administrative software such as Libero SiFattura, improve the management of outstanding invoices. In fact, with these software features, you can monitor payment status, send automated reminders and evaluate cash flow yourself.

There’s another aspect that makes e-invoicing better than paper invoicing: its impact on the environment.

Electronic and ecological invoicing: the advantages

Even though no one (or almost no one) points it out, the transition from analog to digital has led to significant paper savings (tax documents are stored in the cloud, using online management platforms) and lower emissions due to the “non-transportation” of invoices sent by registered mail. In short, e-invoicing can also help reduce waste and harmful emissions, thus helping in the ongoing plan to combat climate change.

Why e-invoicing is good for the environment

The introduction of e-invoicing, therefore, has brought benefits to businesses, their customers and the environment. Sending tax documents over the Internet and storing them electronically has a significant impact on paper consumption and waste. Thanks to legislation introduced starting January 1, 2019, in fact, invoices must be sent only through the Interchange Service and stored in the cloud. This means fewer documents to be printed and stored in folders (or to be trashed, the moment they no longer need to be stored).

The “non-printing”, then, brings with it another advantage: invoices no longer need to be sent via registered mail, thus ensuring savings on greenhouse gas emissions as well. In short, a triple advantage for the ecosystem, and a concrete help in the fight against climate change.
