Sony unveiled in an online event the features of the PS5. Powerful, with next-generation hardware. Who wins the challenge with the Xbox Series X?
The PlayStation 5 is official. Sony has finally removed the veils to its new console in a live broadcast on YouTube lasted just under an hour and in which they were shown all the main features of the PlayStation 5. The response of the Japanese company was not long in coming: a few days after the official presentation of the Xbox Series X, Sony has responded with the PS5. The two consoles have a lot in common, but they differ in some hardware components that could make the difference at the end of the year, when a user will have to decide whether to buy the new Sony console or the Microsoft one.
Among the many innovations announced, there is one that is particularly dear to users: backward compatibility with PS4 videogames. It will be possible to play games from the past generation using an ad hoc mode in the console and at the beginning will be limited to the best 100 titles released for PS4. We’ll see how the situation evolves over time. In terms of power, the PS5 expresses 10.28 Teraflops, a little less than the Xbox One X. But the differences will only be seen in a few months when you can get your hands on the controllers. Here’s all the news on the new PS5.
PS5, technical sheet
Sony has also relied on AMD for the hardware architecture of the PS5. The console has a 3.5GHz octa-core ZEN2 CPU with variable frequency. The GPU is based on an RDNA2 architecture capable of developing up to 10.28 Teraflops of power. In the console presentation, Mark Cerny, head of PS5 development, referred to the fact that for the console’s power management, the paradigm has changed. The power will no longer be variable, but it will be the frequency that will adapt to the performance of the CPU and GPU.
Turning to volatile memory, the PS5 will have as much as 16GB of GDDR6 RAM. Great attention has been paid to the SSD: the console will mount a “custom” 825GB disk. Sony considers the SSD one of the most important components of the entire console and not at home mounts a custom disk and made ad hoc. The disk will be able to transfer 5.5GB per second, making loading times effectively zero. In addition, it will be possible to connect external memories thanks to the NVMe SSD slot and the USB port with HDD support.
Let’s move on to the optical drive. It will be a Blu-Ray capable of reading discs up to a 4K UHD resolution. Finally, Sony has assured that it has taken the audio sector into great consideration, integrating ad hoc hardware capable of reproducing 3D audio.
PS5 backwards compatibility
Those expecting total backwards compatibility with all past PlayStation games will be disappointed. For the time being, Sony has only announced that PS5 backward compatibility will be guaranteed for the best 100 PS4 titles.
In addition, during the presentation were announced several modes that will allow you to take advantage of the backward compatibility of games: the “Pro Legacy Mode” linked to the titles of the PS4 Pro and the “Legacy Mode” for those from the PS4 “normal”.
Finally, official compatibility of the PSVR visor with the PlayStation 5.
And the rest?
In addition to the technical characteristics Sony did not want to reveal more. There are no images of the PS5, the new controller DuaslShock 5 and even a possible release date and price. For all these news we will have to wait for a new streaming event that will most likely be scheduled in the coming months.
