Impossible to get lost with ARkit: Apple revolutionizes navigation

A video popped up on Twitter shows what the future of Apple Maps could look like: no more maps, but virtual indicators superimposed on the real world

When during WWDC, the annual conference dedicated to developers, Apple presented iOS 11, among the different features shown, one of the most interesting was ARkit, the technology that will allow iPhones and iPads to support applications and devices for augmented reality.

The new mobile operating system of the Californian company at the moment is downloadable in beta version and someone begins to experience the potential of ARkit. In particular, a video popped up on Twitter shows how the technology will revolutionize satellite navigation. Published by Andrew Hart, an English developer, in the images you can see virtual arrows and indicators superimposed on the real world that guide the boy through the streets of the city. Andrew Hart enters the address into the smartphone and the new AR navigation system takes him to his destination, showing him the way through three-dimensional signs.

Augmented reality and the new iPhone

The British developer has created a version of Maps, Apple’s navigation application, using ARkit and Core Location. The system Hart has developed is undoubtedly more efficient for getting to places accurately: instead of following a cursor on a map, the programmer interacts directly with the real world.

The example is important for another reason as well. Not only does it illustrate some of the features that will characterize iOS 11, but it gives a glimpse into Cupertino’s future plans. As shown on several occasions, it is now clear that the Californian company will focus heavily on augmented reality.

It will therefore not be a surprise if the iPhone 8, arriving in September along with iOS 11, will integrate technical specifications designed precisely to take full advantage of ARkit.
