A couple of parents have created a thermometer that attaches non-invasively to the baby’s ear and provides live notifications on fever
Few things worry parents like a high fever that doesn’t abate. To constantly monitor their baby s situation, we will now be able to use a thermometer, non-invasively applied to the baby s ear, that transmits live information about the fever.
The thermometer has been named simply Degree and is applied to the baby s ear as if it were a small hearing aid. The temperature sensor rests near the hypothalamus. The device was conceived and created by a pair of parents, Greta and Johannes Kreuzer. “I was inspired by my personal experience,” said Greta Kreuzer, “when my daughters were younger, I often found that I couldn’t predict the state of their fever. It didn’t seem possible to me that we had the technology to consistently monitor the health of adults but not an identical system for little ones.” And so they created Degree.
How Degree Works
The thermometer works thanks to an associated smartphone app that monitors the little one’s temperature in real time, while also creating graphs to see whether or not the fever has been rising in recent hours. Two alarm notifications can also be set on the app, one regarding sudden temperature rises while the other alerts parents that the little one has removed the thermometer from his ear. Degree has been tested with positive results on children between 10 months and 12 years old at the heart surgery center in Munich, Germany. Currently the thermometer is being launched on Kickstarter to buy it you need about 95 euros.
