Apple would repair broken or defective devices at a loss. Thus losing money. This, at least, is what a senior executive claims
Does the Cupertino company spend more than it earns from the repairs of its devices? That’s what it seems according to what Kyle Andeer, Apple’s Vice President of Corporate Law, said in a speech to the US Congress.
The Apple white collar, who deals with corporate law, had been questioned about the functioning of the customer support and the accusation often made to the Californian company about the habit to privilege its own support network compared to independent centers, often cheaper. And, according to the answers provided by Andeer, users could start turning up their noses. Except for some “extraordinary” interventions (such as the replacement of defective batteries of the iPhone 6S), the repair of Apple products are quite expensive.
How much does it cost to repair an iPhone or a MacBook
To repair a MacBook screen you can spend up to 1,000 euros, 350 euros for an iPhone screen. We are talking about important figures, higher than those applied by the direct competitors of the house of Cupertino. Apple has always declared that the cost of the repairs is high because they are precise and delicate interventions, that if they were not carried out correctly could compromise forever the integrity of the device to repair.
Since last August, however, Apple policy seems to have changed. The Cupertino-based company has announced a real change of course, allowing more service centers, both large and small, to take advantage of the same original parts and tools used in Apple Store service centers. Not only that, Apple has started making repair manuals available, organizing training courses and sharing diagnostic tools used by Apple Authorized Service Centers.
The Theory of Kyle Andeer
According to Apple’s Vice President of Corporate Law, the U.S. company would spend more than users pay for repair work. But is this really the case? According to some analysts, Andeer would have included in the bill also the interventions that the Cupertino company makes under warranty, including those covered by Apple Care, the insurance coverage that protects the buyer from any damage for an additional 24 months than those already provided by law.
