Sony is supposedly working on the Xperia 1, a flexible smartphone that should arrive on the market in 2020. Here’s how it will be
If you’re a fan of flexible smartphones then we have good news for you: Sony may soon present a foldable phone, probably as early as 2020, which could be called Sony Xperia F.
Also the Japanese multinational, therefore, is going to “bend” to the market as they have already done by Samsung and Huawei. Or so it would seem according to the latest reports that come from China, home by now of the suppliers of major smartphone manufacturers. According to these reports Sony could use the same flexible OLED screen of Samsung, with a form factor of 21:9 as the last Xperia presented by the Japanese giant. This would confirm, indirectly, the fact that Samsung has finally solved the problems that forced the Korean company to delay the market launch of this product.
Sony Xperia F: flexible display and 5G
The flexible display of the Xperia F, therefore, will be the same as the Samsung Foldable. On the other hand, it is not yet clear whether the resolution of the foldable screen will be the same as the Xperia 1, i.e. 4K Ultra HD. It does not seem, however, that the screen can be transparent as some think after reading the patent filed by Sony last December. But the foldable screen, in any case, will not be the only feature of the Sony Xperia F: this foldable device, in fact, should integrate from now on a 5G modem.
Xperia F: will it save the smartphone division of Sony?
The Xperia F could relaunch Sony among the top of the range and most advanced manufacturers in the smartphone market. A market that, according to Sony CEO Kenchiro Yoshida himself, is a “necessary component” of the company’s business. Unfortunately for Sony, however, in recent times, sales have not gone very well: in the fiscal year 2018, in fact, the house of Minato has sold only 6.5 million smartphones. To raise sales, therefore, Sony could focus both on a possible foldable that on a new top of the range: the Xperia 2, heir to the Xperia 1, which according to the latest rumors from the Far East should have a 6.2-inch OLED display, wireless charging and at least 6 GB of RAM to flank the SoC Qualcomm Snapdragon 855. Features from top of the range able to compete, if the price will be right, with the smartphones of all other major players in the market.
