Google Pixel 6 has been announced as the perfect Android smartphone and today we’ll know if it’s true or it’s an exaggeration, but we already know how many Google wants to sell
After the hangover of new Apple products, presented during the Apple Unleashed online event last night, today it’s the turn of another bigwig: at 7 p.m. Italian time goes online the presentation of Google Pixel 6, the new Google smartphone equipped with the new homemade Tensor chip. The anti iPhone, at least in theory and for how Google thinks that, apparently, is convinced that it can sell a lot of them.
According to the Japanese news agency Nikkei Asia, in fact, Google would have asked its suppliers the necessary components to produce over 7 million pieces between Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. This is a number practically double the sales volumes of an average Pixel model, at least for what is the history of this range of smartphones to date. Also according to Nikkei Asia, then, Google would intend to occupy the market space left empty by the substantial disappearance of Huawei products in Western markets. What is certain is that, between one leak and another and Google pretending not to see them, there is a considerable expectation towards the new phone and, above all, towards the new chip. However, the numbers also need to be put into context.
The (expected) Pixel 6 numbers
If Google really will produce 7 million Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro phones, there’s little doubt that it will sell them all, there will be no stock outs. The reason is simple: 7 million pieces, in the magnum sea of the global smartphone market, is a very low quantity even if we limit ourselves to the top of the range segment.
Just to give some examples: this year Samsung got very disappointing sales for the Galaxy S21, about 20% less than expected, but still sold almost 14 million of them (twice as many as the Pixel 6, at best). Other example: Apple is starting to have problems due to the chip crisis and, according to rumors, has had to cut production of the iPhone 13. By how much? By 10 million.
On which markets will arrive Pixel 6
Finally, there is to say the last thing: Pixel 6 will probably be a great phone and, perhaps, in some respects will even be revolutionary. But it will remain a niche product. Not only for the total number of units produced, but also for the number of markets on which it will be sold.
We already know that the Pixel 6 will not arrive in Italy and that, in addition to the United States, will also arrive in Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan and Taiwan. Important markets, no doubt, but few markets. The real impact of Pixel 6 on the smartphone market, therefore, could be more “told” than “experienced” by most of us.
