What does Cheugy mean, the word that is depopulating on TikTok and is up for auction

A new word is depopulating on social networks and in particular on TikTok in 2021 and it is “Cheugy”: what it means and where to find it as NFT at auction

There’s a new word that appears more and more often on TikTok and is used by the very young of Generation Z: it’s Cheugy and it’s pronounced “chew-gee”. It’s a younger person’s way of referring to something that’s outdated and obsolete, often used to apostrophize “older” millennials.

In a short time, the new slang has gone viral on social media, so much so that on Instagram the Cheug Life page shows examples of everything that can be labeled as cheugy. They range from memes about the minions of Despicable Me to belts with the Gucci logo, as well as for shoes, clothes, but also women or men.  The word is therefore used to describe things and objects that are considered obsolete, or people who are defined as “cheeky” because they try too hard to appear in a way that is considered out of step with the times. The popularity of the new word is such that the term has become an NFT, or non-fungible digital token, and has been auctioned off online.

Cheugy: what it means and when the new word was born

According to reports in the New York Times, the word cheugy was first used in 2013 by a high school girl in the United States, Gaby Rasson. The intent was to describe something or someone who was unfashionable and outdated, or to a person who is trying too hard to appear, so much so that they are cheeky. The word can therefore refer to people, objects and even experiences.

As is often the case, the slang has become increasingly popular, so much so that in 2018 it was even included as an entry on Urban Dictionary and then made its appearance on social media. While there is no strict definition of what cheugy is, the Cheug Life Instagram page allows for a better understanding of what it refers to. You’ll be able to see items like shoes, from Uggs to Birkenstocks, or even minion memes and more. Meanwhile, in 2021 cheugy has become a word that is especially popular on TikTok and with which the Z generation defines the millennials, judged by them obsolete. The #cheugy hashtag in TikTok videos has surpassed 1.5 million views.

Cheugy: NFT of the word up for auction

The popularity of cheugy became such in 2021 that Rasson decided to take it a step further: selling its NFT at auction on the Internet. The young woman explains that she coined the word in 2013 when she was in high school and always used it with her friends, until the launch of The Cheugy NFT: a non-fungible token version of the word that, thanks to the blockchain, becomes a unique work of art for digital collectors to purchase.

NFTs are thus at the heart of crypto art, a new form of digital art that is gaining momentum, with digital works selling at auction for up to several million dollars. The Cheugy NFT is up for auction on the Foundation website, where you can pay in Ethereum (ETH) virtual currency. At the moment the auction base is 0.1 ETH, about $410, but the price could soon go up.
