3 TV series similar to Downton Abbey

Downton Abbey is one of the most popular historical and costume TV series, but there are others similar: here are 3 must-see titles to watch on streaming

Hailed by audiences and critics alike, Downton Abbey is a British TV series aired in Italy until 2016 and set in England. The six seasons, which was followed in 2019 by a movie, can be seen on Amazon Prime Video and tells the story of the aristocratic Crawley family.

The story takes place in the fictional country estate of Downton Abbey, in Yorkshire, between 1912 and 1926. The plot begins with the sinking of the Titanic, in which James Crawley, the earl’s cousin, and his son Patrick, the two rightful heirs to the Downton Abbey estate and the countess’ dowry, lose their lives. This event will trigger the dramatic events that will disrupt the quiet and noble life of the Crawley family and its servants. Downton Abbey is undoubtedly one of the most acclaimed historical costume TV series of recent years, but not the only one. Here are 3 must-see titles.

Bridgerton

Aristocrats, court balls, courtships, debuts in society and above all exciting stories of love, betrayal and subterfuge. These are the main ingredients of the US TV series Bridgerton, which debuted on Netflix in 2020. Like Downton Abbey, this time we are in England, but the story is set in London high society in the early decades of the nineteenth century. The plot begins with the Bridgerton family’s eldest daughter, Daphne, making her debut in high society and determined to win a good husband. The second season is in production and will focus on the events of Anthony Bridgerton, one of Daphne’s brothers. A third and fourth season has also been announced.

Victoria

Victoria is the perfect TV series to recapture some of the atmosphere we loved in Downton Abbey. Set in 19th century England, the plot of this British TV series is all about Queen Victoria, whose very long reign is known as the Victorian era. Played by Jenna Coleman, in the first season we see Victoria ascend to the throne just 18 years old, still inexperienced in managing such a vast empire. In the second and third seasons, there is no shortage of gripping court crises, fragile international relationships, and even marital and family difficulties. The TV series was premiered by La Effe and is now available on Now Tv, Sky and Infinity.

Peaky Blinders

Downton Abbey and Peaky Blinders are similar in many ways: both are British TV series, dramatic and set in early twentieth century England. The stories told are different, but equally exciting. The protagonists of Peaky Blinders are the Shelby brothers, Thomas and Arthur, veterans of the First World War and determined to make a name for themselves in the criminal environment of Birmingham. While waiting for the release of the sixth and final season, which will be followed by a movie (another commonality with Downton Abbey!), you can watch the first five seasons on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video.
