1899: on Netflix the new horror series from the creators of Dark

The streaming platform will welcome the new work of Baran Bo Odar and Jantje Friese, famous for creating the hit series Dark. Here’s what the new project is about.

Baran Bo Odar and Jantje Friese are two of the most talented authors of the moment. They gained the scene thanks to the writing of Dark – The Secrets of Winden. It came out in 2017 and consists, for the moment, of three seasons. Dark is one of the most watched shows in recent years, the perfect mix of drama, horror and thriller. And now it really seems that the two creators want to duplicate its success.

The new series they are working on is called 1899 and it is a costume drama-horror shot in several languages and featuring an international cast. At the moment we don’t have too many news about the actors, but we will certainly see Emily Beecham again, who appeared in several films, including Little Joe and Daphne. The TV series, announced two years ago, is set inside a steamer full of migrants who are about to leave Europe to get to New York. The journey turns into a gripping, terrifying and full of twists and turns, just like Dark.

The plot of 1899: here’s what it’s about

It all begins with the departure of the steamship where a crowd of migrants is gathered. The boat sets sail from London and is destined for New York. The atmosphere is already tense but full of hope: inside there are people of all ages and cultures, belonging to different nationalities and sharing the dream of turning their lives around once they arrive in America.

But something goes wrong: during the journey, already difficult in itself, they come across another ship adrift in the open sea.

But something goes wrong: during the journey, which is already difficult in itself, they come across another ship adrift in the open sea. Inside they find a terrifying situation that will turn the journey into a real nightmare.

Diversity, the unknown but also the theme of emigration will drive the episodes, as the creators have also explicitly announced:

“The aspect of this idea that really convinced us was the fact that we had a genuinely European series with a mixed cast from different countries. At the heart of it is the search for what unites us, what causes divisions and how those divisions are fomented by fear.”

This will be a costume series, so it will be set in the past, more specifically in the late 1800s. The exploration of the concept of time – in full Dark style – then continues. The first episode will be titled The Ship.

The cast 1899: what we know

As mentioned, the protagonist will be the British Emily Beecham, who we will soon see in the Disney film inspired by the character of Cruella De Mon.

The cast will be international, but there is still no official news about the other names.

It is currently in pre-production and filming will probably begin in the first half of 2021. On Instagram you can already visit the official account @1899netflix where some images have been posted.

While waiting on Netflix there are several TV series similar to Dark.
