What was it like to use a computer when floppy disks and 5 1/4 disks existed?

When you play a game like chess against a computer on 'easy', do you simply look at fewer possible moves/scenarios or do you actually try to lose?

Does the length of an Ethernet cable matter? I have a 20 meter cable from the modem to my computer. I was wondering if that affects my internet speed.
In '97 I was bought one that had a 5 1/4 unit even though it was really out of use. There were places where they still sold them for next to nothing.
I remember once just out of curiosity I bought one to test if the drive was still good and yes, it was. It made a very strange noise when recording as if it was rubbing the surface of the disc rather than recording it.
But that was it. So much for my curiosity.
I was getting more use out of the 3 1/2 discs.
