Only if the updater is part of the rom. Otherwise, you'll have to update manually.
My experience with this issue was with cyanogenmod and LineageOS. In both cases the updates I got were only from those companies and not from the official (because they use other servers to store the roms), and those updates were the new roms and not small patches for a few bugs like the official ones.
