You must first transfer all your data to the new phone as soon as you receive it, and then reset the phone you are returning to Factory Original before returning it. Depending on the type of warranty you have, you may be mailed a replacement iPhone, or you may be required to exchange it in-store.
If you're giving your phone to Apple, you don't need to factory restore it.
Apple specifies that you must turn off Find my iPhone before sending it to them, but they don't explicitly say you have to factory restore it.
However, having made a backup, I'd recommend you do that. It takes no time at all, and it's really no extra hassle because when you get the new one, you'll automatically have all your information as it was.
