On your Windows XP PC install Thinfinity Workstation. You can register a free license.
Then from your laptop you will access it using your web browser.
You can use any VNC client-server system, which is similar to TeamViewer but based on a free software system. There are free and paid solutions. Just look for a Windows XP-compatible version to install on your desktop PC, for Windows 10 they will all work.
For its part Microsoft has its own system called Remote Desktop, but I don't know if the protocol is compatible between XP and 10 versions.
