Whatsie is a small wonder. It's a whatsapp client for Linux. Ideal for not having your mobile at hand at all times. ;-)
I suppose there will be many, but my vote goes to zim. It's a desktop wiki, which I use for taking notes for work and leisure. I have some fixed pages, such as client pages, where I jot down contacts or static information ### and then I use the journal pages (accessible via Alt+D) to jot down individual notes.
It's made with Python and GTK, so it doesn't take up too many resources or disk space. The pages are stored in directories with plain text files, you don't need anything special if you want to read or modify them outside the program.
