Probably the battery has been damaged, if you have a way to get another battery like it, that is working fine in its respective laptop and test it in yours you will be able to tell if it is the battery or a fault in the laptop itself.
Complementing the answer from Wilmar Martinez:
The battery is broken ### electricity is getting to the source so it turns on and you can use it plugged in. But the battery cells are not charging in the process, so if you unplug it it will shut down.
I have a Toshiba PC just like you do right now.
