how to configure SMTP mailer in wordpress?

I'm trying to set it up, but this is giving the following error when sending a test message in the Test Email tab. 

CLIENT -> SERVER: QUIT 

SMTP -> get_lines(): $data is ""

SMTP -> get_lines(): $str is "221 2.0.0 closing connection u38-v6sm209121ywh.46 - gsmtp"

SERVER -> CLIENT: 221 2.0.0 closing connection u38-v6sm209121ywh.46 - gsmtp
Connection: closed

SMTP Error: Could not authenticate.

This is just the end of the line.

There is no additional information about the SMTP server but assuming that the "gsmtp" is from Gmail, it follows:

For security reasons, Gmail blocks any incoming connections to your SMTP server. To establish a connection to the Gmail SMTP server and send mail, you also need to allow less secure applications in your account.

If you do not want to enable this feature, try using the Gmail SMTP plugin.
