In short, it is extracting data from a larger base, which you use for some other purpose.

Staging Area is a repository of, say temporary, data to help you build the Data Warehouse. there you do the treatment as extraction and cleaning of data. many make this extraction through ETL (Extraction, Treatment and Cleaning).

Data Mart is a data repository, data sub-set of a Data Warehouse. Imagine the following situation. A company has for one year registered in its database all the information pertaining to sales and billing. So she wants to make a sales forecast for next year. Based on this information, I can create a data mart by extracting and grouping and clearing this information so vendors can make a sales forecast. Based on this I can generate a BI tool so that managers can track progress during the year of this forecast.
