How to create a box from a server?

Here where I work, we are facing many problems due to differences in software versions and the development environment. Vagrant seems to be a great solution in these cases. The problem is that we can not simply create an empty box and manually configure all the OS, libraries, softwares, etc. Can anyone tell me if there is a way to create a sort of server image and use it as a box in vagrant?
