"Above the fold", or top fold of the page, refers to the portion of the page that users can see without scrolling to the bottom. This term is usually linked to the display of advertisements on the pages.

The Google recommendation now is to always make the content appear first, and to have as much space as possible in the layout structure. Most important is that the content appears above the folds.

Googlewill"punish" your site.

Your site will be shown at a lower level in Google results, consequently you will have a number of visitors coming from the smaller Google results. And, per table, a smaller number of pageviews .

But if the focus is only the financial result (how much $ / $ the site yields), you should note if it is more advantage to be in a worse search position and less pageviews or be ranked better and have fewer ads.

"Above the fold" is the content that is displayed without you having to do scroll down to the mouse; "fold" is the name given to the content that appears when you scroll down
