The ISO 9001 standard is usually used for quality management in enterprises and organizations, but can be perfectly used for quality management of the development of a system, in theory.
In order to be satisfied with the implementation of the standard, the interested party has to pay attention to a series of requirements , such as the production of documentation about the adopted processes and the respective quality assumptions used in this quality control, such as the use of software only for this purpose.
It is not common to apply the standard in the development of software because the standard does not bring agility to development, in addition to making the whole process more expensive. What is more common is that there are commercially available systems that do this quality control and consequent correct application of the standard.
Implementation and certification by ISO are two separate steps, usually done by consulting firms, that visit the business to find and mitigate procedural problems. In its context, two things can be approved:
- The process of developing your software;
- Your software, which may have been made to meet the quality management in a company and the consequent compliance with the standard.
