In the 1990s Apple was a tiny company struggling against the juggernaut that was Microsoft and its Windows. The company did, however, have a loyal base of fans and users who were proud to be machers.
The company tapped into this user base and encouraged us to feel different and proud to be Apple users. One way of doing this was to include a couple of coloured Apple stickers (which referred to the colour interface of the Macintosh in the 1980s) so you could distinguish yourself from PC users. No one was a proud Windows user, you used it because it was what was in your office, school, home...
There was a lot of strategically placed Apple logo merchandise and it was zealously given out only to deserving users called Power Users or Apple employees: pins, hats, T-shirts, notebooks and even Trapper Keeper folders.
Today the tradition is preserved but because they are so immensely popular, the effect has been diluted. Today millions of people have iPhones, MacBooks and iPods, and on all those products come a couple of stickers with the new white Apple apple on them.
I think just for advertising, a lot of people put it in the car. ;)
