Because the X on the iPhone X doesn't stand for 10
Actually, if we follow the numbering so far, they skipped the 7S, as they went from 7 to 8.
The iPhone X is a special 10th anniversary edition.
I think that beyond skipping it, Apple released the X just to coincide with the anniversary. I think the next one to come out will be the 9 and 9S (similar to the 8). And they might bring out an 11 (similar to the X).
But 9/11 I think is a number they won't want to market.
Didn't skip it, the iPhone X came out as a special 10th anniversary version of the iPhone.
Surely, at Apple's next presentation in September they'll release the 9(:
It's a special version of the iPhone.
